Miriam Lee’s Winter Pear & Rock Sugar Recipe for Reducing Phlegm with Cough


Food is used medicinally in Oriental Medicine. We call it nutritional therapy. Pears, especially the skin, and rock sugar are cooling. This medicinal cooling effect clears heat in the lung and allows for moisturizing and expectoration of sticky sputum.


Choose the appropriate method of preparation:


Take 1 winter pear (the dark-skinned variety).

-Remove the skin if the phlegm is white.

-Do not remove the skin if the phlegm is yellow (yellow indicates more heat and the pear skin is extra cooling)


Cut the pear in half, remove and discard the core. Fill the hole with approximately 1 tsp. rock sugar-break up the sugar if necessary. Place the pear with sugar in a pot, add 1 c. water.


Cover the pot with lid. Boil 15-20 minutes. Eat the pear and drink the liquid:

Take twice a day

-at night before bed, if having difficulty sleeping

-in the morning, if there is excess phlegm in the morning to help facilitate expectoration
